Nothing about your account is visible outside your relationships until you turn it on. A public profile is off by default, and enabling it exposes only the fields you individually choose to show, not your whole account. Separate settings control whether you show up in Discover or in search at all, independent of whether your profile is public.
Discover is for finding other people running dynamics like yours: browse at random, get suggestions based on shared interests, or search by role, location, tags, and age range. Most accounts aren't public, so a search that comes back mostly empty is expected, not a sign something's broken.
The community gallery is a further, separate opt-in on top of a public profile. Turning it on shows your shared photos in the public feed, and each photo you post still carries its own visibility choice on top of that account-level setting.
